EHS Manager – Quanex

Location:  Molalla, OR / Portland Area – Quanex Building Products

 Position Summary:

The EHS Manager will have multi-plant responsibility within a defined region and will be responsible to partner with Plant Managers to provide an effective environmental, health and safety management system, at each plant. The EHS Manager will be a member of the corporate audit team and support the various facility Teams, Safety Committee members and others to establish and maintain a safety culture where working safely and within a safe working environment is a facility and employee value.

As a valued member of the EHS organization, the EHS Manager will collaborate with the Director of EHS and other regional representatives to develop and revise policies and procedures to ensure consistency across all of Quanex. The ability to demonstrate leadership at a local and strategic level and be seen as an EHS mentor and trainer within their respective region will be critical to the success of this position.

Primary Responsibilities:

Support Plant Management:

  • Establish key safety metrics (both leading and lagging), for the region, in conjunction with the company metric strategy and report these metrics monthly.
  • Provide “on call” support for Plants in the region.
  • Assist Plant personnel in renewing and revising environmental permits as needed for those plants in their region.
  • Review EHS concerns and safety committee recommendation & audits; help ensure closure of identified issues through the Plant management team.
  • Work with facilities in the region to develop a relationship with area medical providers to ensure that injured employees receive the best treatment and are returned to full duty as soon as possible.
  • As needed, serve as the technical resource for incident investigation and causal factor/root cause analysis; may lead investigations.
  • Develop Requests for Proposals and contracts for health and safety assessments andmanagement services, manages and oversees contract performance.

EHS Training & Development

  • Educate, train, and provide support to Plants in the development and execution of consistent safety and environmental management programs.
  • Develop and maintain training resources on various environmental, health and safety topics, to include but not limited to: machine guarding, hazard communication, energy control, industrial hygiene concepts and testing results and other safety and hygiene related subjects, environmental inspections and awareness, hazardous/other waste handling and manifesting, others as required.

EHS Audits

  • Serve as internal auditor for the EHS audit program.
  • Lead safety related audit and inspection processes and open-issues tracking.
  • Review and audit regulatory records to ensure they are properly retained and that reports and notifications are completed on a timely basis.
  • Regularly audit and reviewenvironmental sampling, recordkeeping, reporting and testing for special wastes, non-hazardous waste, hazardous waste, wastewater, storm water, drinking water and machine fluids, floor cleaners and all environmental permits.

Regulatory Support

  • Monitor regulatory arena for new/changing regulations and rulemaking; recommend adjustments to programs/procedures accordingly.
  • Lead risk identification programs; act as a technical resource for the sharing of regulatory requirements and best practices.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • BA/BS degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering or related field preferred.
  • 7 -10 years’ work experience in manufacturing environment with at least 5 years in an EHS role supporting multiple sites.
  • Experience with management system and regulatory compliance audits.
  • Knowledge of worker’s compensation laws and best management practices.
  • Expert knowledge of Federal and State OSHA, EPA and other agencies that pertains to the wood industry.  Strong knowledge of EP Permit recordkeeping, reporting requirements and all OSHA regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Track record for decreasing injuries and improving safety performance.
  • Excellent MS Office Suite skills, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.

Travel:

Each Regional EHS Manager will be held accountable to establish a presence at each plant within their respective region and be expected to be present at key locations in the region on a weekly basis, unless participation is required at any preapproved internal and external meetings, conferences and seminars. A regular travel cadence to each plant will need to be developed and approved by the Director of EHS on a quarterly basis.
