Calling all Puget Sound Chapter Members. CWU and the SHM Program need your support!

Support to procure EHS-related books, manuals, codes, and study guides for the Central Washington University’s (CWU) Safety and Health Management (SHM) Program.

The SHM Program at CWU, which is part of the Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction Department at CWU, is housed in the Hogue Technology Building. Employers regard it as one of the best four-year safety degree program in the western United States. Many of our graduates work in the greater Portland area. The program has grown recently admitting 36 students each year, and even more in the coming years.

The program currently has a 2,000 square foot state-of-the-art laboratory space (Capital Safety SHM Lab). With the growth in enrollment, the SHM program’s dedicated lab space was considerably inadequate to meet the lab-intensive program needs. Hence, based on the program’s request, CWU recently dedicated an 800 square foot space (SNC-Lavalin SHM Classroom) to the program, which has been converted into a Lab Classroom with a reading room. The reading room has new book shelving compartmentalized by major SHM specialty areas. These topics include; Construction, Industrial Hygiene, Process Safety, Risk Management, Ergonomics, Emergency Planning, and Basic Principles. The books will serve as up to date reference material for students to further their education in safety and be a viable resource for our department, as well as surrounding departments.

I am writing to request your assistance to procure EHS-related books, manuals, codes, and study guides for the reading room. The project is taken on by the ASSE Student Section this year and it has become our goal to better the learning environment for the classes that follow. An amazon wish list has been created with the support of NIOSH, OSHA, NFPA, and ACGIH’s recommendation materials. Certain materials have been selected that are relevant to the SHM program here at Central Washington University. We encourage each ASSE chapter to pledge to the program and help foster its ever expanding growth by forwarding this request to its members. The wish list is only advisory, any other materials that are thought to enhance the major will graciously be accepted.

It would be most desirable for the library to be filled by the beginning of next fall quarter (early September 2017) for the upcoming cohorts to have access to them. For further information please contact the ASSE Club Special Projects Coordinator at Central Washington University, please see contact information below. The list can be found at Amazons registry under CWU ASSE the wish list is titled SHM Reference Material. A mailing address is also provided below for your convenience.

Thank you for your generosity,
