PRESENTATION OVERVIEW
Presentation Title: 10 Tips and Tricks to Make Your New Hire Safety Orientation Engaging, Interactive, Sticky — and Yes, Fun
Presentation Description:
Is your New Hire Safety Orientation (NHSO) an empowering and meaningful learning experience — or a “Borientation”: an overwhelming torrent of generic slideshows and forgettable off-the-shelf safety videos?
Too often, organizations rush through NHSO, cramming days’ worth of critical safety information into a single session. The result is predictable: overwhelmed new hires, low retention of key concepts, and missed opportunities to shape early safety behaviors. Yet NHSO is one of the most influential components of any safety management system. When done well, it reduces injuries, accelerates integration, boosts productivity, and strengthens long-term employee engagement and retention.
Because no two organizations are identical, generic or boilerplate NHSO programs rarely deliver meaningful results. Drawing from real-world experience across multiple industries, this engaging and interactive session presents a practical blueprint for designing and delivering effective new hire safety orientation programs. Attendees will leave with proven tips and tricks to make NHSO engaging, interactive, and impactful from day one.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES (three to five specific takeaways)
By the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
- Identify the most frequent mistakes that weaken new-hire safety orientation programs — and how to avoid them.
- List the core components that make NHSO meaningful, memorable, and aligned with adult-learning principles.
- Apply 10 simple, practical and effective tips and tricks to make NHSO interactive and memorable, without sacrificing rigor or compliance
- RELEVANCE TO ASSP MEMBERS
Explain how attendees can apply the presentation to their work as safety professionals and/or how it supports their professional development.
A truly effective NHSO is the seed from which a strong safety culture grows. It calibrates new employees to positive organizational norms, aligns them with expectations, and establishes a clear framework for safe operations. When done right, NHSO does far more than communicate rules — it embeds well‑being as a core value, builds trust from day one, and empowers workers to lead safely throughout their careers.
