PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

Presentation Title: Psychosocial Hazards Are Real Hazards

Presentation Description: This presentation introduces safety professionals to the emerging and evidence‑based understanding that psychosocial hazards are legitimate, measurable, and preventable workplace hazards.

Participants will explore how perception, threat, and organizational conditions shape human behavior and contribute to risk, harm, and trauma, especially in environments where Black workers disproportionately experience psychosocial exposure. The session provides a clear framework for identifying psychosocial hazards, understanding their impact on safety outcomes, and integrating them into existing risk‑management and compliance systems. Attendees will leave with practical insights they can apply immediately within their organizations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES (three to five specific takeaways)

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the core components of psychosocial hazards using the Psychosocial Harm Translation Model™ and explain how they contribute to risk and harm in workplace environments.
  • Evaluate how organizational conditions—including culture, leadership behaviors, and systemic inequities—shape psychosocial exposure for Black workers and influence safety outcomes.
  • Recommend practical steps organizations can take to reduce psychosocial risk and improve psychosocial safety for all workers.

RELEVANCE TO ASSP MEMBERS

Explain how attendees can apply the presentation to their work as safety professionals and/or how it supports their professional development.

Attendees will be able to apply the concepts from Psychosocial Hazards Are Real Hazards immediately within their roles as safety professionals. The presentation reframes psychosocial hazards as legitimate, assessable, and preventable workplace hazards—giving practitioners a structured way to integrate them into existing safety, risk, and compliance systems. By understanding how organizational conditions, leadership behaviors, and systemic inequities contribute to psychosocial exposure, participants will be better equipped to identify early indicators of risk, intervene before harm escalates, and design environments that support healthier worker experiences.

The session also strengthens professional practice by expanding the traditional safety lens beyond physical hazards. Attendees will gain tools to recognize how psychosocial factors influence incident rates, turnover, morale, and organizational performance. This equips safety professionals to address root causes, not symptoms, improving effectiveness and elevating strategic value within their organizations.
